Software and code sharing

Springer Nature now maintains a unified company policy on code sharing. Submission to this journal implies that all relevant new code will be made freely available to any researcher wishing to use it, provided that such sharing does not compromise participant confidentiality. All journal articles will now feature a Code Availability section and authors will be encouraged to share code publicly, using permanent identifiers, and citing code they have used. Authors are encouraged to deposit their code in a stable, publicly accessible repository and to include appropriate documentation to faciltate re-use. For more information regarding the company-wide code sharing policy, please refer to the press release of Springer Nature's unified open code policy.

Individual journals may include further requirements or guidance regarding software and code. The journals with existing code-sharing policies will see no changes. Authors should consult the Instructions for Authors or Submission Guidelines for their chosen journal to ensure compliance with any journal-specific expectations.

For journals without an existing policy, a gradual implementation will occur via integration into Snapp (Springer Nature's Article Process Platform) providing a simplified and singular workflow for authors to manage their article submissions with the publisher.
